Click here to access a copy of the ALHS Library Tip Sheet: Opposing Viewpoints in Context Database that I handed out in class (check your notes on how to use).

Finding cases where police officers used force:
Opposing Viewpoints in Context database (see handout and notes):
  • Click on "Advanced Search".
  • Enter keywords like "police", "use of force", "brutality", specific types of force, or specific geographic areas/cities.
  • Under Publication Dates select "after" and enter in 01 August 2017.
  • Under Content Type select "news"
  • Click "search"
  • Use the article you select to find other news articles -- look for key information like officer names, victim names, cities, local news affiliates that reported on the story.

Web: Mapping Police Violence (2018 cases) -- these are cases where the citizen was killed -- select only one of these.

News sources: Gather as many as possible -- local news, national news, watch out for BIAS, op-ed, etc. Look for factual, non-inflammatory reporting. If searching Google for news reporting, double check that the article you find is an actual news source and not an entertainment site masquerading as news. These links to online newspapers  and the media bias chart should help you:

Remember to cite your sources!
Each article in the database has a "Source Citation" box at the end -- already in MLA 8 format -- just copy and paste.
Articles found elsewhere need to be cited! Easily create an MLA 8 citation using by entering the article's URL on Citation Machine.
